Moving from existing hosting: what happens to your domain and email?

Keep website hosting, domain registration and mailboxes separate when connecting your rental website to Homadu.

Three services you can keep separate

Domain registration gives you the use of a domain name. Website hosting provides the website visitors see at that name. Email hosting provides mailboxes and incoming messages. These services may be supplied by the same company, but they do not all have to change when your website moves to Homadu.

For example, you can leave your domain and mailboxes with your existing provider and point only the website to Homadu. With an existing package from a provider such as One.com, first check which services depend on the package before cancelling anything.

Preparing the move

  1. Check where your domain is registered and who manages its DNS.
  2. List the mailboxes, forwarding addresses and other services you want to keep.
  3. Ask your current supplier how changing or cancelling the hosting package would affect them.
  4. Set up your accommodation in Homadu and test it using the existing Homadu address.
  5. Then connect your custom domain using the A and TXT details in Homadu and check hosting, SSL and your primary address.

Checks after the change

Test your connected hostname using https://. If you also use the address with or without www, check the separate redirect with your provider. Check that your mailbox can still receive and send messages, and update your own website links.

Changing a website A record does not transfer mailbox contents to Homadu. Homadu also does not automatically move your old website files or domain registration through this connection.

Do not cancel existing hosting until you are sure domain renewal, DNS management and required email services will continue to work. Have the company managing your mailboxes preserve MX records and other email settings.
